This event was conceived by Lewis McIntosh who wanted to give something back to his community and do something for a charitable cause. He decided the future Canadian Museum of Human Rights was the cause he would like to support.

Lewis has learned about many human rights issues in Canadian history:

  • that there are Aboriginal people right here in Winnipeg who were taken from their familes and put in residential schools.
  • that in WWII Canada turned Jewish refugees back to Europe
  • that Japanese Canadians we forced into internment camps during WWII
  • that Canadian men and women have been beaten and killed because of their sexual orientation
  • that up until recently, you could be fired from your job if you became pregnant, physically challenged, too fat, or wanted to change things

Lewis also learned about the great strides taken by Canada, and governments of other countries, multinational corporations, entrepreneurs and educational facilities to promote the celebration of minorities, encourage immigration and develop policies around diversity.

Lewis McIntosh had a dream ...
And it came true last Sunday
By Laurie Mustard
Hot off my e-mail: "Lewis McIntosh's dream to create a 5-k walk/run to promote the future Canadian Museum for Human Rights came to fruition Sunday as he sounded the horn at the starting line of the Rock 'n' Roll Stroll -- for humans and their rights. "Lewis, 12, has been working tirelessly for the last six months to organize the event, held at The Forks, future site of the museum.

"Over 100 people participated in the first Mother's Day 'fun' run, including Canadian Museum for Human Rights chairwoman Gail Asper and her mom, Babs Asper."

Lewis believes the late Izzy Asper's dream to create a museum that would teach the youth of the world about human rights -- particularly Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms -- is so important, he has established a permanently designated fund called the Lewis McIntosh Canadian Museum of Human Rights Fund. To donate, or for further info, contact the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba at 477-7520.

Next year's Rock 'n' Roll Stroll has already been confirmed for Mother's Day, May 8, 2005. No surprise that Lewis's proud parents, Barb Altman (who sent me the e-mail) and Don McIntosh are mightily impressed with their son's efforts. As are we all.
